Mildred Helen McAfee was born in Missouri, and was the first woman to receive a naval commission and retired as captain in 1946. During World War II she was the first Director of the WAVES (Women's Reserve of the Navy).
She married Rev. Douglas Horton in Jaffrey, New Hampshire. On his retirement, they moved to Randolph, New Hampshire. She died in Berlin New Hampshire in 1994.
